Conflict and compromise with foreign nations occurred regarding the physical expansion of the United States during the 19th century. American values and beliefs, such as Manifest Destiny and the need for resources, increased westward expansion and settlement.

WESTWARD EXPANSION: Driven by political and economic motives, the United States expanded its physical boundaries to the Pacific Ocean between 1800 and 1860. This settlement displaced Native Americans as the frontier was pushed westward.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how the United States gained Florida, Texas, and the Mexican Cession. They use maps and source evidence to explain how negotiation, annexation, military force, expansionist beliefs, and resource goals shaped each outcome.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place all three acquisitions in order and identify the main method used for each. They can cite evidence to compare diplomacy, annexation, and war, then judge how motives and power shaped each outcome.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat all three acquisitions as peaceful land purchases. They may say Texas was gained directly through the Mexican-American War, rather than annexed after independence. They may also treat Manifest Destiny as a fact, not a belief used to justify expansion.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For Florida, Texas, and the Mexican Cession, name the acquisition method and one piece of evidence. Then answer: Which involved the most coercion, and why?
