The Standard

European nations established colonies in North America for economic, religious, and political reasons. Differences in climate, physical features, access to water, and sources of labor contributed to the development of different economies in the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies.

Key Idea 7.2

COLONIAL DEVELOPMENTS: European exploration of the New World resulted in various interactions with Native Americans and in colonization. The American colonies were established for a variety of reasons and developed differently based on economic, social, and geographic factors. Colonial America had a variety of social structures under which not all people were treated equally.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students explain why Europeans founded colonies for profit, religion, or political power. They compare New England, Middle, and Southern geography, economies, labor systems, societies, and governments. They connect regional differences to specific geographic and human factors.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use maps and sources to explain why shipbuilding grew in New England, grain farming in the Middle Colonies, and plantations in the South. They support comparisons with evidence about climate, land, waterways, ports, and labor.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every colony was founded for religious freedom. They may treat each region as uniform or believe geography alone determined its economy. They may overlook slavery outside the South or assume all colonists had equal rights.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one colonial region and name two geographic features, one major economic activity, and one labor source. Explain one connection among them.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups a blank map, region labels, and cards showing crops, ports, climate, landforms, and labor systems to sort and place.
Ask students to write: Which mattered more in one region, geography or human choices? Support your claim with two details.
Play a region relay where teams match colony, motive, geography, economy, labor, and government cards, then correct one mismatched set.
Present three colonial settlement sites and have students choose one for a farm, port, or town, then defend the choice using map evidence.
