What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps and archaeological, genetic, and oral-history evidence to explain proposed routes into the Americas. They compare Native culture groups and explain how land, climate, and resources shaped choices about food, housing, travel, and trade.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare two culture regions using specific geographic and cultural evidence. They can describe a proposed migration route and explain how geography influenced a Native nation in present-day New York without treating geography as destiny.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Native peoples as one culture or assume all groups lived in tipis. They may present one migration theory as proven fact or ignore Native oral traditions. They may claim climate alone caused cultural differences, overlooking choice, trade, innovation, and change over time.
How to Assess It
- Give students a North America physical map and two short culture-group profiles. Ask: “Choose one geographic feature and explain, with two details, how it influenced each group’s choices.”

Ways to Teach It
At map stations, students place climate, landform, and resource cards, then match each region with likely housing, food, and travel choices.
Write: How could the same river support food, travel, trade, and settlement, and what choices would a community still need to make?
Play a region match game where teams pair environment cards with culture evidence cards and defend each match using the word because.
Study a local New York watershed map and identify how waterways and landforms shaped a nearby Native nation’s settlement, travel, or trade.
