COMPARATIVE CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS IN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE (ca. 600 B.C.E. – ca. 500 C.E.): As complex societies and civilizations change over time, their political and economic structures evolve. A golden age may be indicated when there is an extended period of time that is peaceful, prosperous, and demonstrates great cultural achievements.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Qin and Han China, Greece, and Rome, including major cities, rivers, seas, mountains, and empire boundaries. They explain how geography shaped expansion and government, then compare each society's institutions, work, writing, technology, religion, and social ranks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label key regions and cities such as Chang'an, Athens, and Rome. They use map evidence to explain geographic influence and make specific comparisons among centralized Chinese rule, Greek city-states, and Roman government.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Greece and Rome as one society or assume their governments never changed. They may describe Qin and Han rule as identical, or claim geography completely determined boundaries and political choices.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to label Qin or Han China, Greece, Rome, and one city in each region. Then have them explain one geographic influence and one political difference.

Build a clay relief map showing mountains, rivers, seas, cities, and the approximate boundaries of China, Greece, and Rome.
