COMPARATIVE WORLD RELIGIONS (ca. 2000 B.C.E – ca. 630 C.E): Major religions and belief systems developed in the Eastern Hemisphere. There were important similarities and differences between these belief systems.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify each tradition’s place and time of origin, key figures, teachings, practices, and foundational texts. They compare similarities and differences without ranking the traditions.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can complete an accurate comparison chart for Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism. The student can use specific evidence to explain how a practice reflects a shared value.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every tradition has one founder or one holy book. They may mix up key figures and texts, or treat all followers as having identical beliefs and practices.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two traditions. Name one shared value, one difference, and one practice or text that supports each claim.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups labeled cards for origins, dates, figures, teachings, practices, and texts, then have them build and check six tradition profiles.
Ask students to write: How can two traditions share a value but express it through different practices? Use two class sources.
Play a profile correction game where teams find and fix three inaccurate details in a comparison chart.
Examine a school or city calendar for religious observances, then connect two observances to the values or practices they reflect.
