COMPARATIVE WORLD RELIGIONS (ca. 2000 B.C.E – ca. 630 C.E): Major religions and belief systems developed in the Eastern Hemisphere. There were important similarities and differences between these belief systems.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify features such as origins, teachings, sacred texts, practices, and ideas about right conduct. They compare traditions using details from maps, timelines, and short sources.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain one meaningful similarity and one meaningful difference between two belief systems. They support each comparison with accurate evidence and avoid ranking traditions as better or worse.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every religion has one god, one sacred book, or the same type of worship. They may confuse a religion's place of origin with where its followers live today or assume all followers practice identically.
How to Assess It: Give students two short belief system profiles. Ask, “Name one similarity and one difference, then cite one detail from each profile.”

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs eight source cards about origins, teachings, texts, and practices, then have them sort the cards into a comparison chart.
Write a paragraph answering, “How can two belief systems teach similar behavior for different reasons?” using one example from each.
Play Belief System Match: teams connect clue cards to named traditions, then justify each match using a second clue.
Have students examine a current interfaith calendar and trace two observances to the beliefs or practices they reflect.
