Key Idea 6.3
EARLY RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATIONS IN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE (ca. 3500 B.C.E. – ca. 500 B.C.E.): Complex societies and civilizations developed in the Eastern Hemisphere. Although these complex societies and civilizations have certain defining characteristics in common, each is also known for unique cultural achievements and contributions. Early human communities in the Eastern Hemisphere adapted to and modified the physical environment.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare who held power, owned wealth, and performed different jobs in early river valley societies. They use evidence to explain gender roles and identify achievements linked to each society.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name similarities and differences among at least two societies. They support claims with details about laws, jobs, property, leadership, or surviving artifacts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every society had the same social pyramid, women had no rights, or enslaved people did all manual labor. They may also credit rulers alone for achievements created by workers, artisans, and scribes.
How to Assess It
- Give students evidence cards from Egypt and Mesopotamia. Ask them to write one similarity and one difference in access to power, wealth, or jobs.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups role cards and tokens to model how food, wealth, jobs, and authority were distributed in ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia.
Using two source cards, write which person had more power and explain the evidence that supports your answer.
Play an evidence match game by pairing jobs, rights, laws, and artifacts with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Shang China, or the Indus Valley.
Create a school authority chart, then write one similarity and one difference between it and an ancient social hierarchy.
