PRESENT-DAY EASTERN HEMISPHERE GEOGRAPHY: The diverse geography of the Eastern Hemisphere has influenced human culture and settlement patterns in distinct ways. Human communities in the Eastern Hemisphere have adapted to or modified the physical environment.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students read physical, climate, vegetation, population, land use, and resource maps together. They explain settlement and economic patterns, then compare those patterns at hemisphere, regional, and country scales.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students support a claim with evidence from at least two maps. They explain changes across map scales and recognize that geography shapes choices without fully determining them.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse total population with population density or treat climate and vegetation as the same feature. They may assume geography determines every human choice or overlook patterns that appear only at certain scales.
How to Assess It: Give students rainfall and population density maps of eastern Africa. Ask them to identify one pattern, cite evidence from both maps, and name one likely exception.
