PRESENT-DAY EASTERN HEMISPHERE GEOGRAPHY: The diverse geography of the Eastern Hemisphere has influenced human culture and settlement patterns in distinct ways. Human communities in the Eastern Hemisphere have adapted to or modified the physical environment.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students read physical and thematic maps of the Eastern Hemisphere. They use titles, legends, colors, and symbols to locate and compare climate regions, landforms, waterways, and natural resources.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately identify major features and explain what each map shows. They compare two maps and describe a pattern, such as resources near waterways or settlements in milder climates.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse political borders with natural features or treat climate as daily weather. They may also assume a resource symbol means the resource is equally abundant across the whole region.
How to Assess It: Give students a physical map and a resource map. Ask them to name one geographic pattern and support it with evidence from both maps.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs four map layers on tracing paper, then have them stack the layers and circle places where climate, water, and resources overlap.
Have students write: Which mapped feature most affects settlement, and what evidence from two maps supports your claim?
Play Map Match: students pair feature cards with locations on an unlabeled Eastern Hemisphere map and explain each choice.
Use a shipping route map to identify how seas, mountains, climate, and resources shape where ports and trade routes develop.
