What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students distinguish groups formed by governments from independent nonprofit groups. They explain how each group helps countries work together, defend rights, improve living conditions, or respond to crises.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can classify examples such as the Organization of American States and the Red Cross. They can cite details from a short case study to explain an organization’s role and impact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think nongovernmental organizations are government agencies or that multinational groups govern member countries. They may also assume these groups only provide disaster aid or always succeed.
How to Assess It: Give students one short profile of an organization. Ask them to classify it and name one goal, one action, and one likely result.

Ways to Teach It

Give teams organization profile cards to sort into government-led groups and nongovernmental groups, then match each group with problems it addresses.
Ask students to write: Which organization should respond to a disputed election, hurricane, or refugee crisis, and why?
Play a matching game using organization names, missions, actions, and results from cases across the Western Hemisphere.
Use a recent hurricane report to trace how governments, regional organizations, and relief groups provided different forms of help.
