What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students investigate one group and identify the unfair treatment or loss of self-rule it faced. They explain the group’s goals, actions, opposition, and results using evidence from sources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe a specific struggle with accurate names, events, and dates. They can distinguish a fight for equal rights from a fight for sovereignty and explain what changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think equality means treating everyone exactly the same. They may confuse civil rights with sovereignty or assume one leader or event caused immediate, complete change.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name one group studied, describe one problem it faced, and explain how one action helped pursue rights or sovereignty.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs six Haudenosaunee land-rights event cards to order, then label each event as problem, action, response, or result.
Ask students to write: How is seeking equal rights different from seeking sovereignty? Use one example from the case studied.
Play a matching game connecting groups, goals, protest methods, government responses, and outcomes from cases studied.
Read a current statement from a nearby Tribal Nation or rights group, then identify its goal, evidence, and requested government action.
