Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students read short excerpts from five major U.S. and Canadian documents. They identify principles such as individual rights, representative government, consent of the governed, and limits on government.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can match an excerpt to a democratic principle and cite words that support their choice. They can compare how U.S. and Canadian documents organize government and protect rights.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the Declaration of Independence is a set of laws or that the Constitution lists every protected right. They may assume rights have no limits or that the Canadian and U.S. documents serve identical purposes.
How to Assess It: Give students one excerpt from any of the five documents. Ask them to name one democratic principle shown and underline the words that provide evidence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs short excerpt cards from all five documents, then have them sort each card under rights, consent, limited government, or representation.
Ask students to write: Which document best protects individual rights, and what two phrases support your claim?
Play Document Detective: read an excerpt aloud, and teams identify the document, principle, and evidence for their answer.
Compare a school rule and its appeal process with a constitutional right, noting who sets limits and how people challenge decisions.
