Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify what the president, Congress, and federal courts do. They use founding documents to find evidence of national beliefs and principles. They compare the United States system with those of Canada, Mexico, and another Western Hemisphere country.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can match each United States branch with its main powers and give an example of its work. They can cite a phrase from a founding document and explain a clear similarity or difference among national governments.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the president makes laws alone or that courts enforce laws. They may confuse Canada's prime minister with its head of state or assume all federal systems divide power in the same way.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: Name one function of Congress, explain one principle found in the Constitution, and identify one difference between United States and Canadian government.

Lesson moves

Have teams sort role cards under president, Congress, and courts, then correct the chart using a government reference sheet.
Read short excerpts from the Constitution and Bill of Rights, then write which belief each excerpt shows and cite supporting words.
Play a country clue game using government facts from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, with students explaining each answer.
Compare official government webpages to identify who leads, who makes laws, and who interprets laws in two Western Hemisphere countries.
