COMPARATIVE CULTURES: The countries of the Western Hemisphere are diverse and the cultures of these countries are rich and varied. Due to their proximity to each other, the countries of the Western Hemisphere share some of the same concerns and issues.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students investigate one current concern shared by at least two countries in the Western Hemisphere. They use reliable sources to explain its effects and compare how the countries respond.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify the countries, describe the shared concern, and support claims with source evidence. The student can explain similarities and differences in impacts or responses.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume a shared concern affects every country in the same way. They may confuse opinions with evidence or describe separate events without explaining the connection between countries.
How to Assess It: Give students two short news excerpts about plastic pollution in Mexico and the United States. Ask them to name the shared concern and cite one effect in each country.

Ways to Teach It

Build a tabletop map with yarn linking countries affected by the same hurricane, migration route, trade dispute, or pollution problem.
Discuss or write: How can one country’s choices help or harm neighboring countries facing the same problem?
Play a matching game using country, issue, impact, and response cards, then require students to explain each completed set.
Compare two recent news reports about a shared regional issue and mark each country’s actions on a class map.
