COMPARATIVE CULTURES: The countries of the Western Hemisphere are diverse and the cultures of these countries are rich and varied. Due to their proximity to each other, the countries of the Western Hemisphere share some of the same concerns and issues.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify languages, religions, traditions, and cultural contributions found in four countries. They compare the United States with Canada, Mexico, and one Caribbean or South American country using specific evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name accurate cultural characteristics for each country and explain at least one similarity and one difference. They recognize that each country includes many cultural groups and traditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume everyone in a country speaks one language or practices one religion. They may treat Latin America as one culture or assume Spanish is spoken everywhere. They may limit cultural contributions to food and holidays.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “Compare the United States with one other country studied. Name one similarity, one difference, and one cultural contribution.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups country profile cards to sort by language, religion, music, literature, art, food, and celebrations, then check their choices with sources.
Ask students to write: “How can two nearby countries share cultural traits but still have distinct identities?” Use two studied countries as evidence.
Play a country clue game where teams match cultural facts and contributions to the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the fourth country.
Examine local restaurant menus, product labels, music playlists, or community event notices for cultural connections to the four countries studied.
