GEOGRAPHY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE: The diverse geography of the Western Hemisphere has influenced human culture and settlement in distinct ways. Human communities in the Western Hemisphere have modified the physical environment.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students locate Western Hemisphere regions, major landforms, bodies of water, countries, and United States states on maps. They compare map types to explain where people settle and how land and resources shape work.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students create accurate physical and political maps with clear labels, boundaries, and keys. They use evidence from multiple maps to explain settlement, land use, and economic patterns.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse physical features with political boundaries or treat climate and vegetation as the same thing. They may assume geography completely determines settlement, ignoring transportation, history, technology, and government decisions.
How to Assess It: Give students physical, climate, resource, and population maps of South America. Ask: “Choose one densely settled area and explain its location using evidence from two maps.”
