The Standard
The Western Hemisphere can be divided into regions. Regions are areas that share common, identifiable characteristics such as physical, political, economic, or cultural features. Regions within the Western Hemisphere include: • North America (Canada and the United States) • Mesoamerica (Mexico and Central America) • Caribbean • South America

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate and label North America, Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, and South America on a map. They group places into regions and explain shared physical, political, economic, or cultural features.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label all four regions on a blank map. They place countries and islands in the expected region and support each choice with a shared feature.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Central America or the Caribbean as a continent or country. They may place Mexico with Canada and the United States instead of using the framework's Mesoamerica grouping.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to label the four regions, place Mexico and Cuba, and explain one placement using a shared feature.

Have pairs assemble a cutout map, label each region, and attach feature cards for language, landforms, government, or trade.
Ask students to write: What makes the Caribbean a region even though it includes many islands and countries?
Play a region relay where teams place country cards under North America, Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, or South America.
Plan a four-stop shipping route and explain how regional location, languages, products, or landforms could affect each stop.
