GEOGRAPHY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE: The diverse geography of the Western Hemisphere has influenced human culture and settlement in distinct ways. Human communities in the Western Hemisphere have modified the physical environment.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students read physical maps to locate climate zones, landforms, bodies of water, and natural resources across the Western Hemisphere. They use map keys, colors, and symbols to compare regions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can identify features such as mountain ranges, plains, rivers, forests, and mineral areas on a map. They can describe how two regions differ using accurate map evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse physical maps with political maps or treat colors as country boundaries. They may mistake climate for daily weather. They may also assume natural resources are spread evenly across a region.
How to Assess It: Give students a physical map and ask: “Name one landform, one body of water, and one natural resource shown, then compare two regions.”

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs a blank map, colored pencils, and an atlas to label major landforms, waters, climate zones, and resource areas.
Ask students to write: “Which two Western Hemisphere regions are most physically different, and what map evidence supports your answer?”
Play Map Feature Relay, where teams match feature cards such as Andes, Amazon River, and Great Plains to locations and map symbols.
Have students study a produce label, trace its origin on a map, and identify the climate, land, or water supporting that product.
