EUROPEAN EXPLORATION AND ITS EFFECTS: Various European powers explored and eventually colonized the Western Hemisphere. This had a profound effect on Native Americans and led to the transatlantic slave trade.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students compare how Native peoples viewed European newcomers and how interactions differed across regions. They explain conquest, trade, alliances, violence, and disease through Spanish and French examples.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can compare Spanish conquests with the French fur trade using details from maps, images, or written sources. They can explain how each interaction affected Native communities.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Native Americans as one group or assume every encounter was the same. They may blame population loss only on warfare or describe the fur trade as peaceful and equal.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Compare Spanish conquest and the French fur trade. Name one difference, one Native viewpoint, and one effect on a Native community.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs event cards on conquest, disease, alliance, and trade, then have them sort each by benefit, harm, or mixed effects.
Ask students to write: How might an Inca leader and a Spanish conqueror describe the same encounter differently? Use source details.
Play a source-match game where teams pair evidence cards with Spanish conquest, French fur trade, or a Native perspective.
Map present-day Mexico, Peru, and Canada, then connect each place to one lasting effect of early European contact.
