Key Idea 5.2
COMPLEX SOCIETIES AND CIVILIZATIONS: Between 1100 B.C.E. and 1500 C.E, complex societies and civilizations developed in the Western Hemisphere. Although these complex societies and civilizations have certain defining characteristics in common, each is also known for unique cultural achievements and contributions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how the Maya, Aztec, and Inca used land, water, plants, and animals to meet daily needs. They explain choices involving farming, clothing, shelter, and transportation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match chinampas, terraces, roads, bridges, canoes, and clothing materials to the correct civilization. They can explain how geography shaped each choice and identify similarities and differences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the three civilizations lived in the same environment and used identical solutions. They may confuse adapting to an environment with physically changing it. They may also describe chinampas as floating islands or assume the Inca used wheeled vehicles.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose two civilizations and name one difference in how they met a need. Explain how geography caused that difference.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups clay, water, and craft sticks to model a chinampa, Inca terrace, or Maya raised field, then label the need solved.
Write: Which civilization made the best use of its environment, and what two details support your answer?
Play a card sort matching each civilization with its environment, farming method, clothing material, shelter, and transportation system.
Examine photos of modern terraced farms, raised gardens, and mountain bridges, then connect each design to an ancient solution.
