EARLY PEOPLES OF THE AMERICAS: The first humans in the Western Hemisphere modified their physical environment as well as adapted to their environment. Their interactions with their environment led to various innovations and to the development of unique cultures.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how early peoples in different regions found food, built homes, made clothing, and traveled. They use evidence to connect these choices to climate, landforms, plants, and animals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can examine a map, image, or artifact and explain what it shows about adapting to a region. They can compare two regions and describe how people also changed their surroundings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all early peoples lived the same way or that climate completely determined culture. They may also think Indigenous communities stopped adapting after the distant past.
How to Assess It
- Give students images of a shelter, food source, and tool from one region. Ask: “How did people use their environment, and what evidence supports your answer?”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups clay, sticks, reeds, and fabric scraps to design a shelter for an assigned climate, then explain each material choice.
Ask students to write: “How might daily life differ between a desert community and a river community?”
Play a card match with region, resource, shelter, food, and transportation cards, requiring students to justify each set.
Use a tribal nation website to compare one historical environmental practice with how that nation uses or protects resources today.
