WESTWARD MOVEMENT AND INDUSTRIALIZATION: New York State played an important role in the growth of the United States. During the 1800s, people traveled west looking for opportunities. Economic activities in New York State are varied and have changed over time, with improvements in transportation and technology.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how local jobs and businesses have changed as some factories closed or moved away. They identify growing service and high-technology work, then map major economic activities across New York regions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare local economic activity from 50 years ago with activity today using maps, photographs, interviews, or business records. They can label New York regions with accurate industries and explain why economic patterns changed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all manufacturing disappeared or that service work means only restaurants and stores. They may also confuse high-technology industries with electronics retail or assume every New York region has the same economy.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank New York map and a short industry word bank. Ask them to place three industries in suitable regions and explain one local economic change.
