What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students create and read a political map showing Albany, five major cities, their community, and state boundaries. They locate places using direction words, latitude and longitude, and maps at state, national, and world scales.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately label Albany, the five largest cities from the class data source, and their community. They describe relative locations, use coordinates correctly, and identify the states and country bordering New York.
Common Misconceptions: Students often name New York City as the state capital or confuse city boundaries with state boundaries. They may reverse latitude and longitude or think map scale changes actual distance.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank New York outline map. Ask them to label Albany, their community, one major city, and one border, then describe two locations using direction and coordinates.

Students build a floor map with yarn boundaries and labeled cards for Albany, major cities, neighboring states, Canada, and their community.
Ask students to write three sentences comparing their community’s location with Albany using cardinal directions, distance, and coordinates.
