What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students locate and label New York’s mountains, plateaus, rivers, lakes, Atlantic coastline, and Long Island Sound. They compare physical, climate, and vegetation maps to describe geographic patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately place major features on a blank New York map and use the title, legend, scale, and compass rose. They cite map evidence to connect landforms with climate or vegetation.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse physical maps with thematic maps and skip the title or legend. They may think map colors always mean the same thing. They may also assume all parts of New York have the same climate and vegetation.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank New York map and three map excerpts. Ask them to label four features and write one climate or vegetation pattern supported by map evidence.

Ways to Teach It

Build a raised salt dough map of New York, then paint and label mountains, plateaus, rivers, lakes, and surrounding waters.
Place a physical map beside climate and vegetation maps, then write: What geographic pattern appears across all three maps?
Play a map relay where teams place feature cards on a blank New York map and justify each location using map clues.
Use climate, landform, and vegetation maps to recommend a New York location for an apple orchard, with two pieces of map evidence.
