What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how people in a studied world community get food, clothing, and shelter, then compare those methods with their local community. They describe common jobs and explain how work has changed over time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give accurate examples of resources, goods, services, and jobs in both communities. They describe at least one similarity, one difference, and one change in work over time using evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse needs with wants or assume families everywhere meet needs in the same way. They may think one job represents an entire community or that older jobs have completely disappeared.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: Name one way people meet a need in a studied community, compare it with our community, and describe one job change.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs photo cards of homes, foods, clothing, and jobs from two communities; students sort them and label similarities and differences.
Ask students to write: How does geography affect the food, clothing, shelter, or jobs in one community we studied?
Play Community Match: students pair need cards with local resources, workers, or goods, then explain each match.
Students interview an adult about a past and present job, then add both to a class jobs timeline.
