When faced with prejudice and discrimination, people can take steps to support social action and change.

The concept of universal human rights suggests that all people should be treated fairly and should have the opportunity to meet their basic needs.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify when a person or group is treated unfairly because of identity or assumptions. They compare safe responses, such as speaking up, gathering support, writing letters, or organizing a campaign. They explain how an action could lead to change.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a school or community scenario, students name the unfair treatment and choose a realistic response. They put steps in order and explain who should be involved and what outcome they want.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every disagreement discrimination, even when no prejudice is involved. They may think one person cannot make a difference, or that change only happens through marches. Some expect action to fix a problem immediately.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “A club refuses to let Maya join because of the language her family speaks. Name two actions someone could take and explain how each might help.”

Lesson moves

Give groups scenario, action, and outcome cards, then have them build three chains showing how a fair response could create change.
After reading a picture book about exclusion, ask, “What could a bystander do first, and why?”
Play Action Step Match: teams pair unfair situations with safe responses, then earn a point by explaining the likely result.
Conduct a school accessibility walk, then have students write one specific improvement request to the principal.
