Key Idea 3.7

Governments in communities and countries around the world have the authority to make and the power to enforce laws. The role of the citizen within these communities or countries varies across different types of governments.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways leaders may be elected, appointed, or born into a ruling family. They compare how governments make choices and address community problems with methods used in the United States.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two government examples, a student can explain who chooses the leaders and who makes major decisions. The student can name one similarity and one difference from a United States example.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every country elects its leaders. They may think one leader makes every decision alone, or that citizens have the same amount of influence in every government.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: In Cedar Village, five elders appoint the leader. Compare this with citizens voting for a mayor in a United States community, naming one difference.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Give groups cards showing elections, appointments, inherited roles, council votes, and public meetings. Students sort the cards and explain each choice.
Ask students to write: Who should choose a town leader, and what are the benefits and limits of that method?
Play Government Match: students pair leader-selection cards with community profiles, then compare each pair with a United States example.
Read a local council news article, then identify who proposed, discussed, decided, and carried out the action.
