What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify how leaders are chosen, laws are made and enforced, and citizens take part in the United States and selected countries. They use those features to compare governments.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately name similarities and differences between two governments. They support each comparison with details about leaders, laws, citizen roles, or limits on power.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every country elects leaders in the same way or that all elected governments work like the United States. They may also confuse laws, leaders, and citizens' rights.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one similarity and one difference between the United States government and a studied country's government. Support each statement with a specific detail.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs government feature cards to sort into a Venn diagram comparing the United States with one studied country.
Ask, “How can citizens influence a law in each country, and where do their roles differ?” Require two source-based details.
Play Government Match: teams pair leader, lawmaking, enforcement, and citizen-role cards with the correct studied country, then explain each match.
Compare a local school board election or public meeting with how community decisions are made in a studied country.
