The Standard

Cultural diffusion is the process by which cultures exchange and transmit ideas, beliefs, technologies, and goods over time.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students trace how people, goods, ideas, and technologies move between communities. They identify where an item or practice came from and explain how it changed daily life. They examine exchange in both directions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a map, image, or short text to describe what moved, where it moved, and why. They can name a clear effect on the receiving community and support it with evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think cultural exchange happens only when people move permanently. They may assume ideas and goods travel in only one direction. They may name a borrowed item without explaining how it affected a community.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of a food, tool, or celebration shared by two communities. Ask them to write what moved, where it moved, and one effect.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of foods, tools, clothing, and music, then have them map each item’s movement between two communities.
Ask, “How can one borrowed food, tool, or idea change daily life?” Students answer with a claim and one example.
Play a sorting relay where teams place item cards under people, goods, ideas, or technologies, then explain one effect.
Have students interview a family member about a food, celebration, word, or object adopted from another community and report its effect.
