What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students describe who lives in selected communities and identify languages, traditions, beliefs, and celebrations found there. They compare these features across communities, including their own or one familiar to them.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give accurate examples from two studied communities and explain at least one similarity and one difference. They use class sources and avoid claiming that every community member shares the same practices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume one country has only one language, religion, or tradition. They may also confuse a holiday’s activities with its meaning or assume everyone celebrates it.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one similarity and one difference between celebrations in two studied communities. Support each answer with a detail from a class source.

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs photo and caption cards from two studied communities. Students sort them into language, tradition, belief, or celebration and explain choices.
Write: How are two studied celebrations alike and different in foods, activities, meaning, or participants? Use evidence from class sources.
Play a matching game where students pair celebration clues with community source cards, then justify each match using a specific detail.
Examine school or library event flyers, then map which languages, traditions, or celebrations appear and which are missing.
