What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine songs, dances, stories, and visual art from selected world communities. They connect each example to a historical event, tradition, belief, or shared experience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students describe a cultural work using accurate details and identify the community that created it. They explain how the work reflects part of that community’s past.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all cultural works as entertainment with no historical meaning. They may also assume everyone in a country shares the same art, music, stories, and traditions.
How to Assess It
- Show an image, short text, or audio clip from a studied community. Ask students to name one detail and explain what it reveals about the community’s history.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups artifact cards showing art, instruments, dances, and books, then have them sort the cards by community and historical connection.
Ask students to write: How can a song, story, dance, or artwork help us learn about a community’s past?
Play a matching game pairing cultural works with short descriptions of the events, beliefs, or traditions that shaped them.
Examine a local mural or festival program, then identify how it preserves the history of a community represented nearby.
