What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students examine folktales, legends, oral histories, biographies, and historical accounts from selected world communities. They identify important people, events, traditions, values, and symbols preserved through these sources.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can identify the type of source and explain what it reveals about a community’s past. They can describe a community symbol and support its meaning with evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every legend or folktale as a factual record. They may assume symbols have the same meaning everywhere or confuse oral histories with made-up stories.
How to Assess It: Give students a short folktale and an image of a related symbol. Ask them to name one cultural value and explain what the symbol represents.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups story, biography, oral history, and symbol cards to match with the people, events, or values they preserve.
Read a folktale aloud, then ask, "What does this story teach us about what the community values?"
Play Source Detective by having teams identify mystery examples as legends, folktales, oral histories, biographies, or historical accounts.
Have students interview a family or community member about a remembered event, then write how the story could teach a future generation.
