The Standard
People make adaptations and modifications to the environment. Advancements in science, technology, and industry can bring about modifications to the environment and can have unintended consequences on the environment. People have attempted to take actions to protect the environment.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how people adjust to local weather, land, water, and resources. They identify changes people make, describe unexpected environmental effects, and explain ways communities protect their surroundings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photo, map, or short account, students can identify a community’s need, action, environmental change, and consequence. They can compare the example with their own community and suggest a realistic protective action.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every response an adaptation, even when people physically change land or water. They may assume technology has only benefits or that every environmental effect was planned. They may suggest broad fixes without connecting them to a specific problem.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A community cuts riverside trees to create farms, but flooding increases. Name the need, modification, unintended consequence, and one protective action.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Build two soil trays, one bare and one covered with leaves, pour equal water, and compare runoff after land clearing.
Show before-and-after photos of a dam and ask, “Who benefits, what changed, and what problem might follow?”
Play a card-matching game using community needs, environmental changes, benefits, unintended consequences, and protection efforts.
Walk around the school grounds, photograph one human-made environmental change, and propose one way to reduce its harmful effects.
