What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify physical features and climate conditions in selected world communities. They explain how these factors affect settlement size, location, and people’s daily lives.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use map or climate evidence to explain why people settle in one place rather than another. They connect geography to homes, clothing, food, work, or transportation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think people can settle equally easily anywhere, or that climate and landforms never change daily life. They may also treat one geographic factor as the only cause of settlement.
How to Assess It
- Give students two locations, one near a river and one in a dry mountain area. Ask which location better supports a large settlement and why.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups landform, water, and climate cards, then have them place settlement tokens where a community could grow and explain their choices.
Ask students to write: How might living near a river change where people work, what they eat, and how they travel?
Play Settlement Sort by having students sort location cards into supports settlement or discourages settlement, then defend one choice with evidence.
Compare photographs of homes in a desert and a snowy region, then identify how each home responds to local geography and climate.
