Each community develops an economic system that addresses three questions: what will be produced, how will it be produced, and who will get what is produced?

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify goods made and services offered in selected communities. They explain how a good is produced and who receives or buys it. They compare these patterns across communities.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sort examples as goods or services and give evidence for each choice. The student can trace one product from materials to production to its users.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every job a service or confuse a service with the tool used to provide it. They may think goods are made the same way everywhere. They may assume everyone receives the same goods.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of a community product and ask: What is produced, how is it made, and who receives it? Have them label any related service.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Give groups picture cards of workers, products, tools, and customers, then have them build and explain a production chain.
Ask students to write how bread might be produced and distributed differently in two communities.
Play Goods or Services Four Corners using examples such as rice, haircuts, bicycles, teaching, and bus rides.
Examine labels on classroom items, locate their countries of origin, and discuss how the goods reached the class.
