What Students Need to Do: Students identify cases where nearby communities use the same workers, services, or materials. They explain how sharing helps each community meet people’s needs.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a map or short situation, students can name what is shared, who shares it, and how each community benefits. They can tell a shared service from one used by only one community.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every community has its own hospital, library, or fire department. They may also think sharing means giving something away forever, or that only objects can be shared.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Two towns use one recycling center. What is being shared, and how does each town benefit?”

Lesson moves

Place two town maps on a table, then have students connect shared worker and service cards to both maps with yarn.
Ask students to write: “What service could two small towns share, and why would sharing help?”
Play a matching game where students pair community cards with shared services such as a hospital, bus system, or recycling center.
Examine a local county map and identify one library, park, hospital, or transit service used by people from several communities.
