The Standard

Members of a community specialize in different types of jobs that provide goods and/or services to the community. Community workers such as teachers, firefighters, sanitation workers, and police officers provide services.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify jobs people do in their community. They explain what service each worker provides and how it helps meet a community need.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name several local workers and match each one to a service. The student can explain, for example, how sanitation workers keep shared spaces clean.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every worker makes a product. They may name a workplace, such as a school, instead of describing the worker’s service. They may also confuse tools with services.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one community worker. Write or draw the service that person provides, then complete: “Our community needs this worker because ____.”

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs job and service picture cards, then have them match each worker to the need the worker meets.
Ask, “Which community job would be hardest to go without for one day, and why?”
Play community worker charades, with classmates naming the job and the service after each turn.
Walk around the school, list workers students see, and record one service each person provides.
