The Standard

Goods are the products a person or group of people makes. Services are actions performed by a person or group of people with a certain skill.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students sort examples into goods, which can be made and used, and services, which are tasks people do for others. They identify goods made in their community.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given pictures or short scenarios, a student correctly labels each example as a good or service and explains the choice. The student names a local product and who makes it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any paid work a service, so they label bread as a service because a baker made it. They may also call stores goods instead of naming the items sold or the help workers provide.
How to Assess It: Give students four examples: a loaf of bread, a haircut, a chair, and a bus ride. Have them circle goods, underline services, then name one good made locally.

Lesson moves

Set up a Goods and Services sorting mat, then have pairs place picture cards and explain one choice.
Ask, “What goods are made near us, and what services help our community?” Students draw and label one of each.
Play Goods or Services corners: read examples, students move to the matching corner, then one student explains each round.
Study labels or menus from nearby businesses, and list what each business makes or does for customers.
