What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what to buy when money or goods are limited. They explain how a higher or lower price can lead someone to buy less, choose another item, or wait.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple budget and price list, students choose an affordable set of items and explain their choices. When a price changes, they adjust their plan and give a clear reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a higher price always means a better product, or that everyone responds to price changes in the same way. They may ignore budgets or overlook lower-priced substitutes.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “You have $6. Apples rise from $2 to $3, while bananas stay $1. What would you buy now, and why?”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set up a class store with play money, then raise one item's price and have students shop again with the same budget.
Ask, “If milk costs more this week, what could a family buy instead, and why?”
Play Price Choice: students draw budget and product cards, then revise their carts when the teacher announces a price change.
Compare two grocery flyers, circle prices for similar items, and choose what to buy with a $10 budget.
