Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students distinguish needs from wants and identify buyers, sellers, and prices. They make choices when money or items are limited and explain what they gave up.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a small budget and item prices, a student selects affordable items and explains the choice. The student correctly identifies who pays, who receives money, and what could not be purchased.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every desired item a need or assume all families have the same needs. They may think money is unlimited or that having money guarantees an item is available. Some confuse the buyer with the seller.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “You have $7. Bread costs $4, juice costs $2, and a ball costs $5. What will you buy, and why?” Students label each choice as a need or want and name one item they cannot afford.

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom store with price tags, play money, and limited stock, then have students buy two items and explain each choice.
Ask, “You have $8 at a school fair. What will you buy, and what will you give up?”
Play Need, Want, or Not Available: students sort item cards, then revise choices when a sold-out card appears.
Give pairs a grocery flyer and a $15 budget to choose food for one meal, total prices, and explain their choices.
