Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify resources that help people meet needs, such as food, water, shelter, transportation, and services. They compare where these resources come from in urban, suburban, and rural places, including nearby communities.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given pictures or a simple map, students can name a need, locate a likely source, and explain whether it is local or brought in. They can give one clear difference between two community types.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone in rural areas grows food or that cities produce everything people use. They may also confuse a resource with the place where people buy or receive it.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Draw how food reaches people in two different communities, then label what comes from the community and what comes from elsewhere.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of farms, wells, stores, hospitals, and buses to sort by the needs each resource helps meet.
Students answer the prompt, “How might a family get fresh food in a farm town and a city?” with two labeled drawings.
Play Resource Relay: teams match need cards to community source cards, then explain when a neighboring community might help.
Use a local map to trace where the school gets food, water, electricity, or emergency services.
