What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students compare community sources from different times and identify what stayed the same and what changed. They use source details to support their ideas and place community events in time order.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare two sources and name one continuity and one change using visible clues. The student can arrange dated events on a timeline and explain the order.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume everything in an old photograph has changed or that a missing detail proves something did not exist. They may place timeline events by personal importance instead of date.
How to Assess It: Give students two community photographs and three dated event cards. Ask them to identify one continuity, one change, one supporting clue, and the correct event order.

Pairs examine an old photograph and a current photograph, then place sticky notes labeled same or changed on matching details.
Ask students to write: What changed in our community, what stayed the same, and which source detail supports your answer?
Teams arrange dated community event cards in order, then check their timeline against a teacher key.
Compare the school today with an archival photograph, then add its construction or opening date to a class timeline.
