Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students compare a community in the past with the same community today. They identify what changed, what stayed the same, and place events in time order.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use dates, pictures, and clues to sequence three or more community events on a timeline. The student explains one change and one thing that stayed the same using time words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every old object as coming from the same time, or arrange events by picture order instead of date. They may name differences without checking that both sources show the same community.
How to Assess It: Give students four dated picture cards showing a local school across time. Ask them to order the cards, then write one change and one thing that stayed the same.

Lesson moves

Give pairs dated photos of one street, then have them arrange the photos on a string timeline and label the changes.
Show two playground images from different years, then have students write one change, one similarity, and one piece of visual evidence.
Play Timeline Relay: teams place dated community event cards in order, then explain which event came before or after another.
Compare an old local map with a current map, then mark buildings, roads, or parks that changed or remained.
