Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways people change local land by adding buildings, roads, bridges, stores, and parks. They explain benefits and harms, then describe how people, goods, and ideas move through a community.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a community map or photograph, students can name a human-made feature and explain one positive or negative effect. They can trace how a person, package, or message travels from one place to another.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every human-made change helps the environment, or that all construction harms it. They may confuse moving ideas with moving objects and overlook books, signs, phones, and conversations.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a road beside a park. Ask: “How did people change this place, what is one effect, and what can move along the road?”

Lesson moves

Use blocks, paper roads, and toy trees to build a community, then change one feature and label its effects.
Discuss or write: “Should an empty field become a playground, store, or remain open land? Give one reason.”
Play a sorting game with picture cards labeled people, goods, or ideas, then match each card to a way it travels.
Take a short schoolyard walk and record how sidewalks, parking areas, drains, fences, and trees affect the land.
