What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students locate their community and other communities on maps or globes. They use symbols, legends, and geographic words to describe urban, suburban, and rural places. They classify land as residential, industrial, commercial, or recreational and create simple maps.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can find their community and identify whether a mapped place is urban, suburban, or rural using visible evidence. They can read a legend, classify land use, and draw a clear map with accurate symbols.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rural places have no buildings or that every crowded place is urban. They often confuse commercial land with industrial land. Some draw maps like pictures without a legend or consistent symbols.
How to Assess It: Give students a simple map showing homes, a factory, stores, and a park. Ask them to label each land use, identify the community type, and explain one map symbol.

Ways to Teach It

Build a tabletop community with blocks, toy buildings, roads, and parks, then create a legend for each land use.
Show two community maps and ask, "Which is more urban, suburban, or rural, and what map evidence supports your answer?"
Play a land-use sorting game with picture cards showing houses, factories, stores, playgrounds, farms, and offices.
Use a local map to find the school, nearby homes, businesses, parks, and industrial sites, then discuss how the land is used.
