Communities have rules and laws that affect how they function. Citizens contribute to a community’s government through leadership and service.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways children and adults help their school and wider community. They explain who benefits and how the action improves a shared place or meets a community need.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name realistic service opportunities for children and adults. The student can describe the need, the action, and its effect on other people or a shared space.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only adults, elected leaders, or emergency workers can serve. They may confuse community service with any paid job or simply obeying a rule. They may name a kind act without explaining who benefits.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Name one way you could serve our school. What need would it meet, and who would benefit?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs gloves and clipboards to audit litter on school grounds, then clean one approved area and record the change.
Ask, “How can a second grader help our school?” Students name one action, who benefits, and why it helps.
Play Service Sort with action cards, sorting choices into helps the community, harms the community, or needs more information.
Invite a custodian, crossing guard, or volunteer to explain one service they provide and the community need it meets.
