What Students Need to Do: Students decide whether a rule treats people reasonably and helps the group. They explain why rules matter and what can happen when people follow or break them. They suggest fair responses when rules are broken.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a school or neighborhood situation, students can name the rule’s purpose, its benefit, and a reasonable consequence. They can spot an unfair rule and revise it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think fairness always means everyone gets exactly the same thing. They may assume every rule made by an adult is fair. They may suggest consequences that are unrelated or too harsh.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Only some children get turns with the recess balls.” Write one fair rule, one benefit, and one consequence for breaking it.

Lesson moves

Give groups counters representing playground equipment, then have them create and test a rule for sharing the limited supplies.
Ask, “Should everyone follow a rule if it helps only one person?” Have students explain with a classroom example.
Play Rule Repair: Students draw an unfair rule card and earn a point by rewriting it fairly.
Walk through the school, record three posted rules, and discuss who each rule protects or helps.
