Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students describe how an election moves from choices or candidates to ballots, counting, and results. They cast a classroom vote and explain that voting gives group members a voice. They name ways adults participate, such as voting, attending meetings, or contacting leaders.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can put election steps in order and complete a private ballot correctly. They can explain how votes are counted, identify the winner, and name two ways adults participate in government.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think children can vote in government elections or that all adults are required to vote. They may also think voters announce their choices publicly, or that the winner can ignore agreed rules.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Number four pictures showing candidates, private voting, ballot counting, and results. Then write one way an adult can participate in government.

Lesson moves

Set up a polling station with paper ballots, privacy folders, a ballot box, and a tally chart to choose tomorrow’s read-aloud.
Ask students to write: Why should every voter get one ballot, and why should each ballot be counted?
Give pairs election-step cards to race, sequence, and explain from choosing candidates through announcing results.
Show a local polling-place photo, then have students list what adult voters bring, do, and follow when they arrive.
