Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain what dignity, equality, fairness, and respect for rules look like in familiar settings. They decide whether community actions follow these ideas and explain their reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name the democratic principle shown in a school or neighborhood example. They can explain what is fair, identify a broken rule, and suggest a respectful solution.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think equal and fair always mean everyone gets exactly the same thing. They may also think every rule is fair or that respecting authority means never asking questions.
How to Assess It: Give this exit prompt: “A student is excluded from a game, even though the playground rule says everyone may join. What should happen, and why?”

Lesson moves

Sort picture cards showing classroom situations under dignity, equality, fairness, or respect for rules and authority.
Discuss or write: “When can giving people different help be fair?” Use one classroom example.
Play Principle Match by pairing community scenario cards with principle cards, then explain each match to a partner.
Examine one school rule, identify whom it protects, and suggest a fair way adults and students can follow it.
