What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways people share skills, ideas, traditions, and points of view. They explain how these different contributions help solve problems and improve community life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give specific examples of people contributing in different ways. They explain how a community benefits when members listen to and learn from one another.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think differences cause problems or that everyone must agree. They may limit culture to food, clothing, or holidays instead of including language, beliefs, stories, and customs.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to complete this exit ticket: Name two different contributions people can make to a community and explain how one helps others.

Ways to Teach It
Create a class contribution quilt with paper squares showing one skill, idea, tradition, or viewpoint each student can share.
Discuss or write: How might two people with different experiences solve the same playground problem in different ways?
Sort community contribution cards into ideas, talents, traditions, and viewpoints, then explain one card that could fit two groups.
Interview a school worker about a skill or experience they contribute, then add their contribution to a class community map.
